TELEPHONE the exhibition title was chosen by this class for its familiar group process. A similar process to the childhood game of “Telephone” has been exploited for the inspirational process between students in forming this exhibition’s content and images.

Translation, or even exactness, seems to take another path when one human communicates a summary to another person. The human mind may spark a different interpretation, memory, or understanding, when involving a personal take, than what was intended / represented from its predecessor when passed on. Words, images; can they tell truths, or inspire fantastical lies. The need of interpretation is rooted as a human condition; a measure of such could be considered creativity.

Here, the exchange of information was rooted through email and could be word(s) or image(s) in what was sent and received. A student would then use what they had emailed as their inspirational point in constructing their artwork.

Artwork is installed in a linear format to present in order of email exchange, as the viewer moves around the gallery.

The object-artwork’s plywood support, that began at approximately 12 x 28”, had been made available as the support for each artwork. The class made a decision of a minimum of one saw-cut to the plywood in order to create a dual dialogue between panels; suggestive of the telephone process.

Each student, beginning with what they sent as word or image now began to make their own image to communicate their nascent ideas.

What the exhibition makes apparent, and perhaps captures, are currents of exchange in ideas and activities within a process that initiates-embellishes a creative process for all involved, artist – viewer.
